My Approach

Structured therapy.
Genuinely collaborative.

A clear picture of what CBT is, how sessions are structured, and what to expect at every stage.

What Is CBT?

The thinking
behind the therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is based on a simple but powerful idea: our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours are all connected, and each one influences the others. A stressful thought can trigger a physical sensation of anxiety, which leads to an avoidant behaviour, which reinforces the original thought — and the cycle continues.

CBT helps you notice these patterns as they happen, understand why they've become "stuck," and gradually build new, more helpful ways of thinking and responding. It's one of the most extensively researched talking therapies available, recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for a wide range of difficulties including anxiety and depression.

Unlike some other therapies, CBT is structured and time-limited. It's not about years of open-ended exploration — it's about identifying specific, workable goals and building the skills to reach them, usually within a defined number of sessions.

How we'll
work together

From first call
to finishing well

Every client moves through the same broad structure, though the pace and focus is always shaped around you.

01

Free Initial Consultation

A confidential 20-minute call to talk through what's brought you here, ask any questions, and get a sense of whether we're the right fit. There's no obligation to continue afterwards.

02

Assessment

A longer first session to understand your situation in more depth — the history of the difficulty, what tends to trigger or maintain it, and what you'd like therapy to help you achieve.

03

Formulation & Goal-Setting

Together we'll build a shared understanding — a "formulation" — of what's keeping the problem going, and agree specific, realistic goals to work towards.

04

Regular Sessions

Weekly or fortnightly video sessions, typically around 50 minutes each. Each session builds on the last, combining structured discussion with practical techniques.

05

Between-Session Practice

CBT is a skills-based therapy, so a lot of the real progress happens between sessions. You'll usually leave each session with something small and specific to try in everyday life.

06

Ongoing Review

We'll regularly and openly review progress against your goals, and adjust the plan as needed. You always have the final say on pace and duration.

07

Finishing Well

Therapy ends when you feel genuinely ready — with a clear plan for maintaining progress and handling setbacks independently afterwards.
